The motherhouse at Rimont

But if the novitiate is at Saint-Jodard, what about the house at Rimont?

Rimont remains the motherhouse. As of June 16, 1986, the Brothers of Saint John have been recognized as an autonomous religious congregation, no longer under the jurisdiction of the Abbot of Lérins but of the Bishop of Autun, in whose diocese Rimont is located. At Rimont, the brothers complete their formation with three years of theology. Then they are sent to different apostolic priories. The complete formation cycle - three years of philosophy, three years of theology - comprises the program of studies of the "School of Saint John", which is open to anyone. Courses in introductory philosophy and theology are also offered.

Is there a particular method of teaching theology in the Congregation ?

I
t is taught in the context of monastic life; thus it has a different rhythm as compared to university or seminary teaching.
Theological research is integrated into the brothers' life by means of the lectio divina (spiritual reading). Attentive listening to God's Word really requires the use of the intelligence at the service of faith, and makes a theological work fruitful that would otherwise run the risk of becoming very dry.

To acquire a more penetrating and more contemplative perspective on the mystery of Christ and the Trinity, we adhere to the teaching of Saint Thomas Aquinas, whom the Church gives us as a "common doctor".

Of course, these studies are supplemented by an introduction to the different approaches of positive theology: patristic exegesis, Church history, Canon Law, liturgy, etc. .

Finally, our formation must be supplemented by a consideration of mystical theology (St. John introduces us to this by means of his Gospel, the First Letter, and the Book of Revelation) and by the theology of the Church and the economy of salvation.

Does this formation lead to the priesthood ?

Not necessarily. Nevertheless, the apostolic purpose of the Community of Saint John accounts for the fact that numerous brothers are called to the priesthood. Currently, in 1992, we number 100 priests and deacons out of 300 brothers, 200 of whom are still in formation. Some receive the permanent deaconate, while others remain brothers. It all depends on the Lord's call, particular to each person.

What is the connection between work and community life ?

We stress the importance of helping each other in the search for truth. Fraternal life enables the brothers to help each other in their intellectual work, the more advanced tutoring the younger ones.

How is apostolic life integrated with monastic life ?

The periods of school vacation enable the brothers to have an essential contact with apostolic life, as group leaders for pilgrimages, for example, or in summer youth camps.

A training period spent in an apostolic priory before perpetual profession also provides an opportunity to broaden religious formation in apostolic services.
