Election of Father Jean-Pierre-Marie
as Prior General of the Brothers of Saint John
Fr. Jean-Pierre-Marie with Bishop
Benoît Rivière, after the election
On Monday 23rd April 2007, under the chairmanship of Bishop Benoît
Rivière, Bishop of Autun (France), the General Chapter of the Brothers
of St John, comprising approximately fifty delegates, have re-elected
brother John-Pierre-Marie as Prior General for a term of office of three
years.
In 2001 brother John-Pierre-Marie was elected Prior General for six years,
succeeding the Founder of the Community, Father Marie-Dominique Philippe,
whose term of office had expired.
Brother John-Pierre-Marie, who comes from Touraine, is forty-five years
old. He has been a member of the Congregation of St John since 1982 and
a priest since 1989. His first position of authority was as superior of
a priory near Loches, then as superior of a priory which runs a rehabilitation
program for drug-addicts near Châteauroux, and subsequently as superior
of the priory for theological formation at Rimont near Chalon-sur-Saône,
in the diocese of Autun. He has also been responsible for the Vicariate
of the Community which comprises the nine priories in central France.
He holds a Masters degree in philosophy from the University of Lyon III
and a degree in Spanish. He taught philosophy for eight years in secondary
schools.
Pope Benedict XVI sent a message to the Congregation on the occasion of
the Chapter in which he encouraged the Brothers of St John “to deepen
their commitment to the consecrated life in the footsteps of Christ…
Drawing on the teaching of Father Marie-Dominique Philippe, their founder,
may the Brothers embark on a new stage of faithfulness to their religious
vocation and develop even closer ties of communion with the various local
Churches in those places where they carry out their mission.”
