Father Marie-Dominique Philippe's funeral mass was celebrated on Saturday September 2, 2006, at 10h30 am in Saint John's Cathedral in Lyons. It was presided by cardinal Philippe Barbarin, archbishop of Lyons. Ten bishops (including Most Rev. Fortunato Baldello, apostolic nuncio in France), three abbots, 230 priests (including 100 from the Community of Saint John), 500 brothers and sisters of the Community, several hundred of secular oblates of the Community, religious from various institutes (including from the Order of Saint Dominic), numerous other people, members of the family or friends of Father Philippe participated in the ceremony. The total of people attending was estimated to 2,500. The mass was broadcast by the French Catholic television network KTO.

After the funeral mass in Lyons, Father Philippe was buried in the intimacy of the Family of Saint John in the cemitery of Rimont.
