The reason why I originally wanted to go to Africa was to fill the summer gap between the semesters, and especially get to know this continent that is so close to Europe but so different in any aspect. While applying to numerous programs a number of unusual circumstances occurred and lead me into the hands of the Brothers of St. John in Ethiopia to volunteer for Eagle Eye camps.

At this time, I had little knowledge about what kind of work this was going to be, but I had the feeling there was a reason for this sudden opportunity, and so far it has always ended up being good for me to follow this feeling.

When I arrived it was quite easy to feel home, everything was taken care of as well as possible with regards to the circumstances surrounding us and there was and is a quite warm atmosphere within our group for the first camp consisting of Brother Iovane, Father Alex and the volunteers from the US, Josette and Gabriella.

Each one of us was quite different from the other person but also it was the right time for each of us to be in Awassa. It was a wonderful time we spent together.

When I found out what exactly the teaching would be about, I could not yet see the parallels to my current life but shortly after we started to work with the first youth group I got the point and again this feeling in my guts was right.

From the age of 14, I had less contact to the catholic church with some occasional outliers like the world youth day and especially after some changes within my future profession and some lows in the past years I felt a little lost and unconfident with all the choices that we have to make in life. Knowing something was missing I had tried to recover my relationship with god within this year but after July I still had many question left unanswered.

In the end it was this experience with the youth, our team and the teachings that brought me close to God again and gave me strength. The youth taught me a broader perspective of what friendship can be. It was astonishing to see how grateful they were for the conversations and personal sharing we had in a country where the freedom of speech has not yet succeeded.

The brothers helped me to realize that I do not have to worry about choices any more, to have trust in God and his plan for me and many other good things I will try to keep in mind.

In conclusion, it was not hard to work for the youth voluntarily, since the enrichment of my horizon was worth way more than any salary I could have gotten. Therefore, I would like to thank the Brothers of St. John to give me this opportunity and welcoming me not with open hands but open arms!

La raison pour laquelle je voulais aller en Afrique était de combler l'écart entre les semestres d'été, et surtout apprendre à connaître ce continent qui est si proche de l'Europe, mais si différents dans tous ses aspects. Tout en m'appliquant à de nombreux programmes et à la faveur d'un certain nombre de circonstances inhabituelles, je fus conduit dans les mains des Frères de Saint-Jean en Ethiopie à me porter volontaires pour les camps Eagle Eye.

A cette époque, j'avais peu de connaissances sur le genre de travail que cela allait être, mais j'ai eu le sentiment qu'il y avait une raison profonde pour cette occasion soudaine, et jusqu'à présent il a toujours fini par être bon pour moi de suivre ce sentiment.

Quand je suis arrivé il était assez facile de se sentir la maison, tout était pris en charge aussi bien que possible en ce qui concerne les circonstances qui nous entourent et il y avait une ambiance très chaleureuse au sein de notre groupe pour le premier camp composé de Brother Iovane, le Père Alex et les volontaires des États-Unis, Josette et Gabriella.

Chacun de nous était très différent de l'autre personne, mais aussi il a été le bon moment pour chacun de nous d'être à Awassa. Ce fut un moment merveilleux que nous avons passé ensemble.

Quand j'ai découvert ce que serait exactement l'enseignement durant les camps, je ne pouvais pas encore voir les parallèles à ma vie actuelle, mais peu de temps après nous avons commencé à travailler avec le groupe de jeunes d'abord, et de nouveau ce sentiment d’avoir fait le bon choix dans mes tripes se manifestait.

Dès l'âge de 14 ans, j'ai eu moins de contacts à l'église catholique avec quelques rencontres occasionnelles comme les journées mondiales de la jeunesse et surtout après quelques changements dans mon futur métier et des bas au cours des dernières années, je me sentais un peu perdu et manquant de confiance avec tous les choix que nous avons à faire dans la vie. Savoir quelque chose manquait, j'avais essayé de récupérer ma relation avec Dieu au sein de cette année, mais après Juillet j'avais encore beaucoup de question laissées sans réponse.

En fin de compte c'est cette expérience avec les jeunes, notre équipe et les enseignements, qui m'a porté près de Dieu à nouveau et m'a donné la force. Les jeunes m'ont appris une perspective plus large de ce que l'amitié peut être. Il est étonnant de voir comment ils étaient reconnaissants pour les conversations personnelles et le partage que nous avions dans un pays où la liberté d'expression n'a pas encore réussi.

Les frères m'ont aidé à réaliser que je n'ai pas à me soucier outre mesure de choix, mais d'avoir confiance en Dieu et son plan pour moi et beaucoup d'autres bonnes choses je vais essayer de garder à l'esprit.

En conclusion, il n'était pas difficile de travailler pour les jeunes volontairement, car l'enrichissement de mon horizon valait beaucoup plus que tout salaire j'aurais pu avoir. Par conséquent, je tiens à remercier les Frères de Saint Jean de m’avoir donné cette opportunité et de m'accueillir non pas à mains ouvertes, mais les bras ouverts!
