Après un an et demi de présence en Ethiopie, nous avons eu la joie de la visite du Père Thomas, Prieur Général de notre Communauté.

Cette visite lui a valu de fêter deux fois Noël, car le 24 décembre il était avec nos frères en Lituanie. Or suivant le calendrier éthiopien, c’est le 7 Janvier qu’est fêtée la Nativité du Seigneur. Ce fut donc l’occasion de fêter ensemble dans la joie son deuxième Noël, suivant la liturgie éthiopienne. Découverte impressionnante d’une liturgie qui n’a pas laissé insensible notre cher frère Thomas.

Deux jours plus tard, c'est-à-dire le 09 Janvier, nous avons fêté notre Père Saint Jean au prieuré. A cette occasion plusieurs amis, ainsi que certaines communautés religieuses, ont été invités à se joindre à nous pour la célébration eucharistique. Le Père Thomas nous a volontiers donné plusieurs conférences ce jour là en guise d’une petite retraite communautaire. Elle était vraiment nécessaire pour nous plonger dans la finalité de notre vocation de frère de Saint Jean, surtout en ce temps de fondation.

Sortie fraternelle à Ambo & au lac de cratère du mont Wenchi

Pendant son passage parmi nous, l’opportunité nous a été offerte de faire ensemble un voyage de découverte. Nous avions été jusqu’à présent au nord, au sud et dans l’est du pays. Cap donc sur Ambo, ville située à 110 km à l’est d’Addis Abeba. Cette ville est appréciée pour ses sources thermales. Au centre de celle-ci trône une grande piscine d’eau de source qui fait la fierté et la joie de ses habitants. C’est de cette région que vient l’eau minérale gazeuse ambo qu’on ne se lasserait pas de boire en Ethiopie pour étancher sa soif.

A environ  une heure de route au sud-est d’Ambo, à bord de la Land Cruiser du Youth Office très à l’aise sur les pistes, nous avons grimpé les versants du volcan Wenchi jusqu’au bord du cratère, à 3200 m d’altitude. A cette hauteur, s’offrait à nous une vue magnifique du cratère, à l’intérieur duquel « niche » un lac étoilé de plusieurs îlots. Il semblerait que ce soit là une des vues  panoramiques les plus saisissantes d’Ethiopie. A bord d’une pirogue nous nous sommes rendus sur une île « sanctifiée » par la présence de moines orthodoxes qui vivent pauvrement dans des petites cabanes tout autour d’une charmante église traditionnelle construite à l’époque du règne du Négus Hailé Sélassié.

Pour la petite anecdote, ce jour là c’était en fait le jour de la veillée de Noël, et les éthiopiens de coutume jeûnent pour préparer la solennité de Noël. Pendant notre sortie fraternelle, nous n’avions pas prévu de pique-nique, car on prévoyait de trouver de quoi manger sur place à Wenchi. Hélas! Le seul restaurant adéquat était fermé parce que c’était un jour de jeûne en préparation de la fête de Noël. Nous sommes donc retournés à Addis Abeba le ventre creux…c’était sans doute un appel de l’Esprit Saint à demeurer en communion de vie spirituelle avec nos frères éthiopiens qui ont une dévotion particulière au jeûne. Voie non négligeable de la spiritualité orientale orthodoxe que fait sienne l’Eglise catholique de rite éthiopien.                                                                                    

La visite très fraternelle de notre Prieur Général, a été pour nous source d’espérance pour la  fondation qui demande un véritable dépouillement pour s’enraciner dans la culture éthiopienne.

After a year and a half of presence in Ethiopia, we had the joy of the visit of Father Thomas, Prior General of our community.

This visit earned him celebrate Christmas twice, because he was on December 24 with our brothers in Lithuania. Yet according to the Ethiopian calendar, is celebrated on January 7 the Nativity of the Lord. It was therefore for him an opportunity to celebrate together with us in joy his second Christmas according to the Ethiopian liturgy. Impressive discovery of a liturgy that did not leave indifferent our dear brother Thomas.

Two days later, so to say 9th January, we celebrated our Father Saint John at the Priory. On this occasion several friends, as well as some religious communities, were invited to join us in the Eucharistic celebration. Father Thomas has willingly given several lectures that day by way of a small community retreat. It was really necessary for us into the purpose of our vocation as brothers of Saint John especially during this time of founding.

Fraternal Encounter in Ambo & The crater lake of Mount Wenchi

During his stay among us, the opportunity was offered to us to make a journey of discovery. We had been in the north, the south, the east. Cape therefore on the west to Ambo, located 110 km from Addis Ababa. Indeed, this city is popular for its thermal springs. At the center of it stands a large pool of spring water that is the pride and joy of the inhabitants. From this region comes the sparkling mineral water ambo, one never tire of drinking in Ethiopia to quench his thirst.

About an hour's drive southeast of Ambo on board of the Land Cruiser from the Youth Office at ease on the slopes, we climbed the slopes of the volcano crater to the edge of Wenchi, to 3200 meters altitude. At this height, offered us a magnificent view of the crater, within which niche a lake studded with several islands. It seems that this is one of the most stunning panoramic views of Ethiopia. Aboard a boat we went on an island "sanctified" by the presence of Orthodox monks who live in poverty in small huts around a charming traditional church built during the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie.

For the little story that day was actually the day of Christmas Eve, and the Ethiopian custom of fasting in preparation for the Solemnity of Christmas. During our trip, we did not plan a picnic and that because we expected to find something to eat on site at Wenchi. Alas! The only proper restaurant was closed because it was a day of fasting in preparation for Christmas. We went back to Addis Ababa on an empty stomach ... it was probably a call from the Holy Spirit to remain in communion of spiritual life with our brothers in Ethiopia who have a particular devotion to fasting. Significant pathway of Eastern Orthodox spirituality which is embraced also by the Ethiopian Catholic Church.

The very fraternal visit our Prior General, has been a source of hope for the foundation to demand a real recount rooted in Ethiopian culture.
